As the Meteoceanics Institute expanded research, innovation and service activities beyond the Earth System Science (GeoSys) realm, it became essential to entrust the planetary GeoSys core to be deeply and robustly nurtured by a Principal Scientist known for her eclectic interdisciplinarity, scientific excellence, methodological rigour and ethical integrity. The Institute is thus honoured to welcome PI Dr. Julia Hall on board.

Dr. Julia Hall is a renowned Hydro-Climatologist with further background and expertise in Geo-Ecology and Geostatistics, working across the interdisciplinary realm of the Earth System Sciences. Moreover, she has extensive lecturing experience dating back to her doctoral studies during which she designed and delivered courses across her core fields of expertise. Now at the Meteoceanics Institute she once again finds scientific and academic freedom to take her teaching vocation to the next level.

Julia Hall graduated in Geoecology from Tübingen University and worked in the Irish Climate Analysis and Research Units at the National University of Ireland Maynooth, where she also completed her Doctorate.

She went on to work as Research Scientist at TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology), Austria, where she had a crucial role in the European Research Council project Deciphering River Flood Changes, most notably in gathering, discerning, processing and curating an unprecedented European-wide flood database, along with thorough investigation of driving hydro-climatic controls and mechanisms. Her central role at the core of this endeavour from acquisition to coding, curating and investigating, gave her an unrivalled understanding of the processes and dynamics underneath flood regime changes.

As the project development stage was concluded across landmark publications including in Science and Nature, she moves on to novel scientific challenges with an impact transcending the academic scope. Her work is now reaching not only scholars, but actually key decision makers across the public and private sectors, thereby enabling her excellence to actually provide concrete added value to society beyond academia.

The NORA Research Alliance is one of the high-impact initiatives where her interdisciplinary expertise, rigorous analytical skill and scientific integrity strongly contribute to making the leap from fundamental research to empowering people.

Research Interests:

  • Spatiotemporal analysis of hydro-meteorological extremes, hydro-climatic regimes and multiscale dynamics from local to global, from event-scale to geologic scale, using thorough robust geospatial, geostatistical and dynamical system analytics methods.
  • Statistical and dynamic process-based detection and attribution of drivers of observed changes in hydrological regimes.
  • Analysis of climate and land related processes and their influence on hydrological flow regimes and extreme streamflow events. With the focus on when, how and why changes in drivers affect changes in flow regimes.
  • Integrated analysis of eco-, geo- and hydrological processes and interactions, along with their role in driving dynamic regime changes across the Earth System.
  • Design and development of decision support frameworks pertaining Water Resources Management and Environmental Risk Assessment.
  • Regeneration of ecosystems and agro-ecologic farms from an Earth System Dynamic perspective.
